One of the most well know scandals in all of the Tour De France’s history is Lance Armstrong and his blood doping scandal that caused him to lose all of his seven consecutive Tour De France titles.
He began his sporting career as a swimmer at the age of twelve, he was extremely good and placed fourth in a Texas state 1.500m freestyle and only stopped pursuing purely swimming races after competing in a junior triathlon called Iron Kids Triathalon, where he won at the age of thirteen. At the age of sixteen he became a professional triathlete, and was ranked first for the nineteen and under group. In 1992 at the age of twenty one he became a professional cyclist with the Motorola Cycling Team. Over the course of his career he won many titles such as: Tour DuPont, Thrift Drug Classic, UCI Road World Championship, and multiple Tour De France wins. On October 2, 1996 he was diagnosed with advanced testitcular cancer, which had spread throughout his entire body. In 1998 he rekindled his cycling career going on to finish fourth in the Vuelta a España, and then winning the Tour De France in 1999, and four stages throughout the race. He had been accused of blood doping, and drug use since his 1999 Tour De France win, and the allegations were proven true after an investigation by the Anti-Doping Agency in 2012. Where it was concluded that he had used performance enhancing drugs over the course of his career, and named him the leader of the most successful blood doping program. Armstrong chose not to protest the charges and had his titles removed, had all of his achievements past 1998 stripped from him, and was banned from competing in all sports that the follow the World Anti-Doping Agency code.
